I was so thrilled to learn that The Phantom of the Opera would be making a stop in Singapore during the same week as Lady Gaga’s Mayhem tour. To make it even more special, my brother, Yves, surprised me with a ticket to the show. While I’m not typically a musical theatre aficionado and don’t often attend stage productions, Yves’ passion for musicals was so infectious that it drew me in completely. Thank you for igniting that spark, sissy! Haha!

That day was a wild one. I’d spent the early afternoon drinking with friends, what was supposed to be a casual 2:00 PM session turned into a full-on wine fest. I somehow ended up downing an entire half bottle myself and, ironically, needed more wine just to recover from the wine! (Note to self: tell the group about that one—they’ll laugh for days.) After finally getting some rest and pulling myself together, I got dressed and headed to Bayfront MRT station, the closest station to Marina Bay Sands (MBS) which was super convenient since the MRT Aljunied station is just a short walk from my place.

I arrived early enough to take some photos at the lobby booths and decided to grab a quick bite. I went for an Angus beef slider and a Coke, which set me back SGD 20. Looking back, I wish I’d just gotten popcorn at least that’s allowed inside the theatre. But hey, I was starving, and it hit the spot.

For those unfamiliar with the story or in need of a quick refresh—The Phantom of the Opera is an enduring, emotionally charged tale of love, obsession, and identity. Based on Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, it follows Christine Daaé, a young soprano whose career blossoms under the guidance of a mysterious and masked musical genius known as the Phantom. Set in the lavish, haunting world of a 19th-century Parisian opera house, Christine finds herself caught between the Phantom’s dark, compelling influence and her growing love for her childhood friend Raoul. The result is a tense and tragic love triangle that explores the extremes of desire, fear, and longing.

The show began right on time at 8:00 PM and from the very first note, I was absolutely captivated. The production was breathtaking, a feast for the eyes and ears. The set design, lighting, and visual effects were so immersive it felt like I was inside a cinematic masterpiece, except it was all unfolding live before me. It was as though I were watching a blockbuster film, only with the soul and raw emotion that only live theatre can deliver.

The entire cast delivered exceptional performances, but what truly stood out were the portrayals of Christine and the Phantom. Christine was brought to life by a talented British-Singaporean actress who was raised in Singapore, and her performance was both graceful and powerful. But it wasn’t just her—the Phantom’s presence was equally compelling. Their vocals were crystal clear, effortlessly soaring through the theatre with emotion and strength. Every line they delivered felt deeply authentic, capturing both vulnerability and intensity. Together, they brought a raw emotional depth that made the story feel more alive and immersive than ever.

The Phantom of the Opera isn’t just a musical—it’s a full-sensory experience. One of the most breathtaking moments was when they performed the iconic title song, The Phantom of the Opera, with the Phantom and Christine gliding across the stage in a boat, surrounded by fog and dramatic lighting. It was pure theatre magic – mesmerizing and unforgettable. The entire production was hauntingly beautiful and emotionally gripping. From the lavish costumes to the sweeping, dramatic score and powerful performances, every element was executed with world-class precision. It completely won me over, and without a doubt, it stands as one of the most unforgettable live performances I’ve ever witnessed.

I would for sure watch it again (and again). In fact, the film adaptation doesn’t even come close to capturing the depth and magic of the live show. If you’re even mildly interested in theatre, or just want to witness a pure, passionate work of art brought to life, this is a show you cannot miss. It’s not just a performance, it’s a masterpiece.

Quote of the week

“Here’s my advice for dealing with love or family trauma: accept the apology you’re never going to get and move on. There, I just saved you PHP10,000 in therapy. You’re welcome.”
