Cagayan De Oro City
Continuing my Mindanao adventures—here are my experiences from Dinagat, Marawi, and Iligan and Bukidnon
In my late 20s, I often found myself dreaming about the exhilarating water rafting experiences that Cagayan de Oro is famous for. Known as the rafting capital of the Philippines, it had been a destination on my bucket list for as long as I could remember. Finally making the trip and setting foot in this lively city felt like a long-awaited dream come to life!
As I plunged into the adventure, the adrenaline coursed through my veins like never before. The thrill of navigating the rapids was absolutely electrifying, far surpassing anything I had imagined. Each rush of water brought a wave of excitement, and I loved sharing the experience with fellow thrill-seekers who were just as eager to conquer the river. The laughter, shouts of exhilaration, and the stunning backdrop of lush greenery made for an unforgettable experience.
But it wasn’t just the rafting that captivated me; it was the spirit of Cagayan de Oro itself. The warmth of the locals, the vibrant culture, and the sense of camaraderie all contributed to an atmosphere that felt like pure joy. I found myself not just enjoying the adventure but also connecting with the heart of the city.
Now, with the memories of this incredible journey still fresh in my mind, I can’t wait to return to Cagayan de Oro. I’m already planning my next trip, eager to dive back into the thrilling waters and create even more unforgettable memories in this beautiful city!
Background of Cagayan De Oro
Cagayan de Oro is renowned not just for its thrilling white-water rapids but also for the warmth of its people. Often regarded as the happiest place in the Philippines, this vibrant city—affectionately known as the “City of Golden Friendship”—boasts a community of particularly friendly and welcoming locals. Their bright smiles and hospitable nature offer a heartfelt greeting to visitors, enhancing the city’s charm. Conveniently situated, Cagayan de Oro also serves as the “Gateway to Northern Mindanao,” making it an ideal starting point for exploring the region’s natural beauty and rich culture.
Transportation – Grab or motorela (a hybrid of a motorcycle and a jeepney)
Please be aware that a Grab ride to the airport will take approximately 1 hour and will cost between 900 PHP and 1,500 PHP, depending on the time of day.
Accommodation
Red Planet Cagayan De Oro October 18-20
Claro M. Recto Ave CDO
I booked a two-night stay for PHP 3,507.54 because my flight was late in the evening, so I added an extra night to ensure I could get some rest.
I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! Its location near SM CDO Downtown makes it very convenient for accessing van transportation to the airport. It’s also perfect for those planning to go water rafting, as the organizers can pick you up right from the hotel.
The accommodation itself was clean and spacious, equipped with toiletries, an elevator, and friendly staff. I appreciated the hot and cold showers in the bathroom. While there wasn’t a designated workspace, that didn’t bother me at all. The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, ensuring a great night’s sleep.
I also enjoyed the fantastic restaurant on the ground floor, which I visited frequently. Lastly, having refillable water available at the front desk was a thoughtful touch. Overall, I truly loved my experience at this hotel!

This organizer was fantastic, prioritizing everyone’s safety throughout the entire experience. They picked me up right on schedule, and the journey from my hotel to the water rafting drop-off point took about 45 minutes. Once we arrived, they provided clear instructions on how to navigate the rapids and emphasized the importance of teamwork and safety at all times.
During the jeepney ride, I met a fellow traveler named Josh, and we teamed up with a group of friends, making our rafting boat a lively party of six. It was a great way to bond and enhance the adventure!

Continuation of Bukidnon trip here
Sinulom Falls And Bolao Cold Spring
After visiting the stunning falls in Bukidnon, we made our way to Cagayan de Oro. After a scenic 1.5-hour drive, we arrived at Bolao Cold Spring. There was an entrance fee, though I can’t recall the exact amount since my guide took care of that for me.
Before we headed to the spring, Kuya Mark parked the car, and we embarked on a short trek that included crossing a hanging bridge. I had actually seen this bridge during our water rafting adventure as well! Crossing it was an adventure in itself. The bridge swayed from side to side with each step, adding a thrill to the journey, and it was definitely not made of concrete!
Once we made it across, a multicab was waiting to transport us to the cold spring. After a quick 5-10 minute ride, I was ecstatic to finally explore this beautiful spot. The area featured cozy cottages scattered around, all free to use, along with clean showers and restrooms. There was even a small store where you could grab snacks and drinks. I absolutely loved the refreshing chill of the water—it was invigorating to dip into such clean, cold springs in Cagayan de Oro. I cherished every moment spent there!
After our visit to the cold spring, we headed back the way we came and stopped to see Sinulom Falls. Although there’s just an observation deck, it was still wonderful to take in the view. Sinulom Falls features 28 small cascades flowing down toward the Cagayan River, and I really enjoyed watching them. Plus, the nearby resort offers a swimming pool where you can relax and swim while admiring the falls.
Cucina Higala – After the refreshing dip to the cold springs, of course, I wanted to have an early dinner to my favorite Cucina Higala. I tried different cuisine here like kangkong and beef (I forgot what it’s called) but I liked it! I highly recommend this restaurant
Cagayan De Oro High Ridge PHP200-1000
I visited this restaurant with Kuya Mark that offered a stunning view of the entire Cagayan de Oro skyline. The prices were a bit higher due to the breathtaking scenery, but since I was already quite full, I just enjoyed a refreshing mango shake and fries.
711 – In Cagayan de Oro, convenience stores transform into lively bars at night. They set up stools outside, allowing people to grab food or drinks from 7-Eleven and enjoy them right there. It was really impressive to see this unique setup, something we don’t have in Luzon!

Water rafting Adventure
I was absolutely thrilled to be experiencing water rafting in Cagayan de Oro! Although the water wasn’t the typical white color due to recent rains in Bukidnon, the adventure was nothing short of amazing. I loved sharing this experience with fellow adventurers whom I barely knew—it turned out to be a fantastic bonding opportunity. This was truly one of the best adventures I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to return to CDO to do it all over again! What an incredible day!
Things to Note:
Shopping Before Rafting: Before you begin your water rafting adventure, you’ll find shops selling fun items like refrigerator magnets and hair ties or eyewear straps to keep your accessories secure while you paddle. After the activity, there’s a store that sells balut and other snacks, which I found to be a delightful and tasty surprise!
Dress Appropriately: It’s essential to wear a rash guard or any clothing that provides sun coverage, as the heat can be intense during this activity. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to protect your skin from sun exposure!
Storing Belongings: You can leave your personal items in the jeepney, allowing you to fully enjoy the water experience without worrying about your belongings.
Shower: You can rinse off after the activity, but I wouldn’t recommend it due to the limited facilities. It’s much better to wait and shower at your accommodation.

The organizers ensured that we returned to the city on time after the activity.
Circa 1850
Open Daily: 7 AM – 9:30 PM
Price Range: PHP 300 – 1000
Right beneath my hotel is this charming restaurant. I stopped by for coffee before setting off on my adventure and returned later for an early dinner. I ordered the 12-hour brisket, which was incredibly appetizing—tender and flavorful! I initially thought it would be a reasonable portion for one person, but I couldn’t finish it; it turned out to be quite a hearty meal!
After enjoying a delicious meal, I took a moment to rest before heading to the terminal next to my hotel at 6:30 PM. There was already a van waiting, and although it wasn’t full, the driver was kind enough to leave early. I only paid PHP 300 for the ride. Just as we were setting off, it started to rain at 7:31 PM, but I made it just in time for my flight at 8:45 PM.
I arrived shortly after midnight and booked a hotel in Pasay for a good night’s sleep before heading back to Batangas to spend time with my brother, Phoebe, and Joey.
My adventure in Cagayan de Oro was surprisingly amazing! I never expected to enjoy this experience as much as I did, and I can’t wait to return to Mindanao soon. I truly had the best time here!
Love,
Maria, sometimes, Niskie
