Batangas, Philippines

Date of Trip – March 17-19
Dumaguete trip in this link

Nestled in the heart of the Philippines, Siquijor beckons with an air of mystique and allure. It is 45 minute by boat from Dumaguete. Revered for centuries as a realm of witchcraft and the unknown, this tiny island province has captured the imagination of adventurers and mystics alike.

Siquijor is a playground of exhilarating experiences. Embark on a trek through the island’s verdant jungles, where hidden waterfalls and cascading streams await discovery at every turn. Whether it’s cliff jumping into secluded lagoons or exploring mysterious caves, adventure awaits around every corner.

Getting to Siquijor from Dumaguete

The optimal route to reach Siquijor from Dumaguete is via ferry for 45minutes, as there are no direct flights from Manila to Siquijor. I opted for the Oceanjet ferry service, which proved to be convenient. Reservations can be made through their website link. Oceanjet also operates routes to various destinations in the Visayas region. The earliest service they have is 7:20am tourist class (with aircon)

Regrettably, during my journey to Siquijor, I made the mistake of booking through 12Go, resulting in a higher fare of PHP 658, inclusive of PHP 90 for insurance, instead of the standard PHP 385 without insurance. I advise against using 12Go for booking purposes. Many bloggers receive commissions from 12Go and may recommend it on their sites, despite the considerably higher prices compared to booking directly through Oceanjet. This was highlighted by a local resident of Siquijor, the proprietor of the hotel where I stayed, who recommended booking directly through Oceanjet.

Oceanjet offers a variety of accommodation classes to select from, with the tourist class being the air-conditioned option priced at PHP 350. Additionally, there is an extra PHP 110 charge for porter services, depending on the quantity and weight of your luggage, as well as a terminal fee of PHP 15. You will receive your seat number upon exchanging your online ticket at the terminal in Dumaguete port.

Budget – PHP10,000 inclusive of tour packages, transportation, food and accommodation

Capital – The island consists of six municipalities, namely Siquijor (the capital town), San Juan, Lazi, Maria, Enrique Villanueva, and Larena.

Currency/ATMs – The Philippine Peso is the accepted currency. ATMs are available throughout Siquijor. The majority of establishments do not accommodate credit card payments; instead, they accept Gcash. However, due to limited reception, online payments can be challenging. Hence, it is advisable to withdraw cash when traveling in Siquijor.

Laundry – you can ask your hotel/hostel if they have laundry services. I did not see any laundrymat in the town of Siquijor.

Internet Connection – The internet connection at my hotel is reliable; however, signal strength is weak in many areas of Siquijor, particularly in caves, waterfalls, and remote islands. Embracing the opportunity to disconnect from your phone and connect with yourself is a truly memorable experience in Siquijor.

Weather – tropical and has two distinct seasons: the dry season, which runs from December to May and the wet season, which runs from June to November.

Language – Bisaya. Tagalog and English can be understood by some residents.

Transportation – If your accommodation is distant from the bars or restaurants, a tricycle ride to your destination can cost PHP150. However, renting a motorbike for PHP250 per day is a more convenient and economical option if you are familiar with riding one. Siquijor retains its allure as a somewhat remote destination, which adds to its charm, especially for those seeking an authentic island life experience.

Tour Package – I opted for tour packages through Kuya Jorge, as suggested by Kuya Thony. However, it is advisable to book services directly with Kuya Jorge next time, as dealing with him directly proves to be more cost-effective.

You can contact him via SMS or Whatsapp at this mobile number (0935) 512 5952

PHP1500 – Coastal Tour not inclusive of entrance fees and parking fees
PHP1800– Mountain tour not inclusive of entrance fees and parking fees

Things to Note –
1. It’s more economical to rent a motorbike if you’re proficient in riding one, as it allows you to traverse different parts of Siquijor. Tricycle rides in Siquijor can cost between PHP 150 to PHP 300. However, for non-private tricycles, the fare is only PHP 20.
2. Kindly be aware that in Siquijor, each tour to various destinations typically requires a separate guide. This is actually the first destination in the Philippines where an additional guide is necessary aside from your primary guide. However, the amount of tip you give will ultimately determine the situation. I may have over-tipped in Siquijor, to my surprise!
3. Make sure to book an accommodation near the restaurants

Accommodation

Hanna’s PlacePHP 3,000.00 I reserved a two-night stay at Hanna’s Place in San Juan. Check-in time is at 2:00 PM, and check-out is at 12:00 PM. San Juan area in Siquijor offers various accommodations and dining options. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay; the owner was extremely accommodating, restaurants were within walking distance, the Wi-Fi connection was excellent, my room was spacious, and the bathroom was clean and free from clogging issues. However, please take note that the proximity to the road may pose a challenge for light sleepers. Fortunately, this wasn’t an issue for me, and I look forward to returning to Hanna’s Place on my next visit to Siquijor.

Things to Bring – cash, water, sunblock, cap, umbrella, waterproof bags, powerbank, plastic bags to cover your things, swimwear and trail sandals/shoes.

Itinerary

March 17, 2024 (Sunday)
Dumaguete Port

I woke up early to ensure I would catch my ferry to Siquijor on time. Although my hotel was very close to the port and I could have walked, I decided to take a motorcycle taxi due to my luggage. Upon arrival at the Dumaguete port, porters were available to assist with carrying luggage. It’s amusing how living in Manila often makes you cautious around porters and strangers on the street, but in the countryside, like Dumaguete, they are much more helpful. The porters there are genuinely there to assist and expect payment for their services mainly your luggage at the terminal.

We embarked at approximately 7:00 AM for our scheduled departure at 7:20 AM. The boarding process was seamless, and the boat was impeccably clean. We arrived in Siquijor at around 8:00 AM, where my guide, Kuya Jorge, was already waiting for our first tour.

Upon arrival at Siquijor, I noticed that the waters in the port were exceptionally clean, and there was a serene calmness in the atmosphere. The mystical aura of the place was palpable, and I felt genuinely excited for my Siquijor adventure.

I decided to do the Mountain tour first. It comprises the following –
Lugnason Falls entrance fee – 20PHP Tour Guide Fee – depends
Bucafe – depends on your order but approximately PHP150-300/person
Butterfly sanctuary – Entrance Fee PHP100
High Mountain – Free
Cantabon Cave – Entrance Fee 20PHP Light 30PHP Tour guide 500PHP

Bucafe
Monday-Friday (9:00AM-7:00PM) rest day Wednesday
Saturday-Sunday (8:30AM-7:00PM)

This café offers a scenic view and enjoys a slightly chilly climate. It’s colloquially referred to as the “bukid” or farm café. I appreciated the spacious ambiance, although the downside was the considerable wait time of 1.5 hours for my order to be served. When my food finally arrived, it was satisfactory, but nothing particularly exceptional. The café’s atmosphere resembled other establishments I’ve visited in Rizal, so it didn’t stand out to me as anything unique. Considering the extended wait time, I find it difficult to recommend this café to others.

Lugnason falls
Entrance fee PHP20
Guide Fee PHP100

One of the highlights of Lugnason Falls is the iconic Tarzan swing, suspended from the towering trees above. With a rush of adrenaline, thrill-seekers swing out over the pool below, letting out exhilarated cries as they soar through the air. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, brave souls can take the leap from the cliffs surrounding the cascade, plunging into the refreshing waters below. The deep milky green pool offers a perfect landing spot, inviting swimmers to cool off in its rejuvenating embrace.

After a refreshing swim, I ventured to the nearby cold spring, just a brief 5-minute hike from the falls. The tranquility of the waterfalls was particularly appealing, as they weren’t overly crowded. The hike to reach the falls itself was manageable, taking only 10 minutes, which made the journey quite enjoyable.

Butterfly Sanctuary
Entrance Fee – PHP100

This butterfly sanctuary is undoubtedly my favorite, allowing visitors to observe both the larvae and the butterflies up close. The unique experience of being able to touch them as they gracefully flutter about, just out of reach, evokes a sense of majesty and wonder.

High Mountain
Free

The ascent involves climbing 150 steps, offering a panoramic view overlooking Siquijor. Personally, I wouldn’t mind skipping this part on my next visit.

Cantabon Cave
Entrance Fee 20PHP Light 30PHP Tour guide 500PHP
Tip 200PHP

Embarking on what I thought would be a thrilling escapade, I found myself navigating through the most strenuous spelunking adventure of my life. With each painstaking crawl, I delved deeper into the heart of the caves, enduring a grueling 1.5-hour journey. The sandals I had chosen, meant for leisurely walks, proved to be ill-equipped, lacking the sturdy grip needed for such a cave exploration.

Amidst the dimly lit caverns, I marveled at the intricate formations of stalagmites and stalactites, a testament to the ancient forces of nature at work. I also had the chance to drink clean water inside the caves whenever I felt tired, which was amazing!

Despite the physical exertion, the experience proved to be both educational and exhilarating, blending moments of wonder with adrenaline-fueled challenges.

As I emerged from the caves, tiredness weighed on every part of me, but I felt a rush of pride. This remarkable adventure had tested my boundaries, making a lasting impression on my mind.

Balay Pahauli Juanita’s Healing Hut
Love Potion – PHP700

Siquijor has always held a captivating allure with its mystical tales and enigmatic histories, from voodoo dolls to ancient potions whispered to possess miraculous powers. Intrigued by the island’s mystical reputation, I found myself drawn to a local healing hut, eager to witness the craft behind the creation of a love potion.

Though grounded in skepticism, there was an undeniable thrill in suspending disbelief, allowing myself to be swept away by the possibility of magic. As I observed the intricate process of potion-making, I couldn’t help but marvel at the blend of tradition and belief that permeated the air.

As I reflect on this unforgettable encounter, I am reminded that sometimes, it’s the stories we tell ourselves that hold the most magic. I carry the enchantment of this experience with me, a treasured memory to cherish until the end of days.

JJ Restobar
Opens everyday live bands during Fri-Sat
PHP150-300

JJ Restobar, an oceanfront establishment, offers live band performances every Friday and Saturday, adding to the ambiance. Highly praised by locals, I decided to try their renowned pork sinigang and mango shake. However, upon receiving my order, I found the sinigang resembling more of a chopseuy with soup, which resulted in a slightly unusual taste for me. Nonetheless, the overall experience at JJ Restobar was enjoyable.

Runik
PHP800 for pool view access consumable PHP700

Runik is a cliffside retreat ideal for witnessing stunning sunsets. While it leans towards the pricier end, I found the amaretto sour and truffle croquettas to be exceptional. The staff is accommodating, and guests have the option to select the PHP600 entrance fee, with PHP500 consumable food and drinks. However, this option restricts access to the poolside and premises.

Paliton Beach
Entrance PHP20 Parking Fee PHP20

Things to Note – There are guides who can take pictures of you for a fee, but how much you give is up to you. Typically, I give PHP100 for this service in Siquijor.

I began my day with a refreshing early morning swim at Paliton Beach, followed by breakfast. The beach boasted pristine cleanliness, fine sand, and crystal-clear waters, creating a serene environment for my morning retreat.

Dolce Amore
PHP300-500
Opens everyday 10am-9pm pizza is available after lunch

I enjoyed a delightful breakfast at this charming resort. Although I was eager to sample their pizza, I learned it was only available in the afternoon. Instead, I opted for eggs benedict and an iced americano, both of which contributed to a wonderful breakfast experience.

Pitogo Cliff
Entrance PHP30 Guide fee PHP100

Situated on the southwestern side of the island, overlooking the awe-inspiring Sulu Sea, lies the tranquil cliffside adorned with Pitogo trees. This serene locale derived its name from these indigenous trees that thrive in the area. Before becoming one of Siquijor’s sought-after travel spots, locals frequented the cliffside to gather and revel in the breathtaking scenery it offers.

I relished admiring the stunning cliffs in this area and capturing photographs. You can also try cliff jumping for an adventurous thrill (I didn’t try it this time, but I might next time I visit Siquijor).

Kawayan Cliff Resort
Entrance Fee PHP100

This is actually not part of the tour so I just asked Kuya Jorge to stop by here because it was recommended by the tour group I was with in Dumaguete. It’s actually far so I added PHp300 for the transportation fee. It was just okay for me, I did not really find it so amazing but the fact that this resort was private and you will have a gate that when you open it offers a breathtaking view of Sulu sea. I have recorded videos of this experience, but unfortunately, I am unable to upload them. Additionally, I enjoyed a refreshing drink at the location. It’s important to note that they only accept cash, and there is no Wi-Fi or signal available in the area.

Enchanted Balete Tree
Entrance fee – 20PHP
CR – PHP5 and it’s clean

This 400-year-old Balete tree holds the distinction of being the oldest and largest in the province of Siquijor. Adding to its mystique is the presence of a natural spring that flows beneath its roots. Locals are unsure of the source or reason for the water’s flow, but they attest to its cleanliness and safety. The cool spring water cascades from the tree into a man-made pool, where fish gracefully swim. Visitors can indulge in a spontaneous foot spa by dipping their feet into the pool, where small and big fishes will nibble away at unwanted skin, providing a unique and rejuvenating experience.

You can also buy souvenir in this place. I loved my experience here.

We made a brief stop at the church and convent for only five minutes before proceeding to have lunch at Y Road Restaurant. The portions of food were generous (I ordered pork sinigang and iced tea), and the taste was quite satisfactory.

Cambugahay Falls
Entrance Fee PHP50 Parking PHP30
Use of swing – PHP50
Use of Raft – PHP100

The highlight of today’s tour undoubtedly was the awe-inspiring Cambugahay falls. As I stood before its breathtaking blue cascades, framed by the lush greenery of the surrounding rainforest, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder and excitement.

Descending the steps to reach the base of the waterfall added an extra element of adventure to the experience. Despite the physical exertion, the journey was well worth it, as I found myself immersed in the natural beauty that surrounded me.

One of the most exhilarating moments was swinging beside the waterfall, feeling the rush of adrenaline as I soared through the air. However, the adventure came with a price – my left arm is still recovering from the thrill of the swing.

Salagdoong Beach
Entrance PHP50 parking Fee PHP30

Salagdoong Beach features two picturesque coves bordered by swaying coconut palms and pristine white sand shores. Just a short distance from the shoreline lies a vibrant reef, perfect for snorkeling and swimming adventures. Additionally, cliff jumping spots add an extra thrill to the experience. Although swimming is only allowed until 5 pm and the beach is relatively rocky compared to Paliton Beach, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here. Overall, the experience was fantastic.

Lilibeth’s Pan Bisaya
PHP20-50

I made a pit stop at this charming bakery to sample their assortment of local pastries and bread. I thoroughly enjoyed their offerings, and to my delight, they kindly offered me a discount when I realized I didn’t have cash on hand.

Cang Isok Old House

This is the oldest surviving house in Siquijor. The Cang-isok House, also referred to as the Tejano House, is believed to have been constructed in the mid-1800s by a Spanish gentleman named Mariano Tejano. Its name, Cang-isok, is derived from its proximity to the Cang-isok village. However, beyond these sparse historical facts, little is known about the events that unfolded at the Cang-isok House over time.

Paliton Beach
Free when I returned because I paid in the morning

I thoroughly enjoyed the sunset watching and swimming at this location. Additionally, I ate balut, a fertilized bird egg typically incubated for 14 to 21 days, which added to the memorable experience. Watching the sunset and swimming alongside the stingless jellyfish (which was present during this time) made it a truly unforgettable time.

Dagsa Resto Bar
Monday – Sunday 11:00 am to 9:30 pm
PHP300-500

This establishment is conveniently located within walking distance from my accommodation. They offer seating areas where guests can enjoy some privacy. Additionally, there is live entertainment provided by a band in the evenings. Following the staff’s recommendation, I ordered the seafood (variety of seafood like fish, squid and shrimp) curry, which turned out to be delicious. Overall, dining here was a delightful experience that I thoroughly enjoyed.

March 19, 2024 (Tuesday)

I woke up at 9:00am to get ready and had breakfast near my hotel.

Monkey Business
M-Sunday 8:00am-11:00pm

I appreciate the al fresco seating arrangement and the sandy ground, which creates a beach-like ambiance. Although I originally intended to try their potion cocktails for breakfast, they were no longer available, so I opted for corned beef with rice, sunny side up eggs, and an iced americano instead. The breakfast was enjoyable, and I found it entertaining to swing while waiting for my order to arrive.

Siquijor Sign

Siquijor has captured my heart in ways I never imagined possible. From the moment I set foot on its shores, I found myself entranced by its spellbinding beauty. Words fail to capture the sheer joy and contentment I experienced during this trip.

In Siquijor, I found not just a destination, but a sanctuary for the soul—a place where time seems to stand still, and worries melt away. It’s a love affair that I know will last a lifetime, and I eagerly await the day when I can once again lose myself in the enchantment of Siquijor.

Kindly watch the video I created to capture the entirety of the Siquijor experience. Link here.
