Date of Concert – January 23, 2024 (Day1)
Location – National Stadium, Singapore

After hearing nothing but praise about Coldplay’s electric live performances, I’ve been itching to catch one of their shows. I knew I had to fly to Singapore to see them when the news broke last year that they would be performing there. I also wanted to make sure I visited my friends in Singapore. I’ve missed Singapore and my pals ever since I left three years ago.

Singapore hosted six day Coldplay concerts this year! In order to buy a ticket online last year, I had to wait in line for about three hours. I purchased Day2 General Standing (near the stage) for Jan24th concert ticket. I was supposed to go by myself. Toby, one of my friends from the Philippines, chose to join instead, but he bought two tickets for Day 1 on January 23rd and told me to tag along. I now have two tickets to use, one for Day 1 and one for Day 2.

The ticket my friend bought for Day1 was a Cat8 ticket for Day1, which put me far from the stage. I still liked it because I was with a friend and could see a lot more since I usually see all the performances. Even though, I didn’t see the whole band up close, I still enjoyed it. I was there for the music and the experience.

Before the Concert

In the morning, I made my way to Paya Lebar Quarter (PLQ) Toastbox to savor some kaya toast. After a shopping spree at Changi City Point, Toby and his family grabbed some Peranakan food at The White Tiffin, including beef rendang and rempah udang (spicy prawns wrapped in glutinous rice—not my favorite). In case you were wondering what I bought, I got a pair of Crocs and a Kipling little bag for my trip to Thailand. Haha!

Day1 January 23rd (Tuesday)
National Stadium Singapore

We took the train and arrived at MRT Stadium at 6:30pm. It went smoothly; there were signs when we arrived at the place. The bags were checked by security (bottled waters are not permitted inside). When attending a performance, it’s best to bring simply yourself and your phone. It rained the other day in Singapore, but today was a beautiful day for a concert. We entered National Stadium; the gates had already opened at 6:00pm. They scanned our barcode, which we received in PDF format, and handed us a light band to wear for the length of the show before returning it. We verified our seats before venturing out to grab some munchies. Please keep in mind that cash is not accepted; all payments are made electronically, which is convenient.

Coldplay didn’t begin performing until after 8:30 p.m., after two opening acts. There was a technical issue during The Scientist set (Chris Martin’s piano wasn’t working), but they still managed to do it impressively in electronic style. Singing and dancing the night away with Coldplay and the entire crowd was an incredible experience. It was a stunning spectacle of light and music! Listening to all of my favorite songs live from my college days until now was the most enjoyable experience! When it comes to bands who reliably deliver top-notch music, Coldplay is definitely one of the best.

Day2 Jan24th

After drinking at Harry’s in Clarke Quay with my friend Tin on January 24, I was little drunk to make it to the Day 2 concert. I was also meant to have supper with some friends, but I didn’t make it because it was raining. But I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the music on the first day and the drinking on the second! Haha!

Things to Note –
1. Don’t bring snacks/water bottles to the concert; they will be seized. There are kiosks at the concert venue.
2. Return the light stick after the concert
3. The performance location and organizers were well-organized; there were signs where to go everywhere, and those in charge were quite helpful. The parking space was huge for the concert goers.
4. There was no cellular coverage during the concert, and there were no escalators for crowd control. Please be aware that the MRT is congested as people leave the event, although it is moving.
5. I love how well-organized the event in Singapore was, and I love that my lodging was close to the event, so we only had to walk from National Stadium to our place.
6. Going to a concert in Singapore is always a blast, but nothing compares to seeing it live in the Philippines. The crowd at PHL is so much fun; it’s connected and full of energy, and the bands and singers always put their own unique spin on the show by singing or saying things in Tagalog.

Love,
Maria, sometimes, Niskie

“Here’s my advice for dealing with love or family trauma: accept the apology you’re never going to get and move on. There, I just saved you PHP10,000 in therapy. You’re welcome.”
